Towering Standpipes Come Down At Eagle Point And Paynesville

Armed with boom lifts, specialist cutting equipment and a 25 tonne crane, engineering contractors are about to dismantle two disused, 20 metre high standpipes in Eagle Point and Paynesville.

By East Gippsland Water - 12th October 2009 - Back to News

The East Gippsland Water-owned standpipes are made of steel and were taken out of service some years ago following extensive upgrade work to the local water supply system. Located adjacent to the old Eagle Point water storage basin at the corner of Paynesville Road and Forge Creek Road, and beside Grandview Road in Paynesville, one is 3.5 metres in diameter and the other eight metres. Both will be carefully dismantled in sections.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "These standpipes have been redundant for some time and have no future role to play in the supply of drinking water to the local community. It makes sense to remove them now rather incur increasing and ongoing maintenance costs for their upkeep. By taking this action we can salvage the steel, which will be recycled."

The dismantling work is due to start on Monday 12 October and be completed by the end of the month.
