By news@gippsland - 20th July 2016 - Back to News Staff and friends of a former childcare centre discovered letters to their future selves and photos from their past when they opened a time capsule at Fowler Street, Moe on Wednesday.
The time capsule was opened by former centre director Heather Borrman and Latrobe City’s deputy mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, in front of more than 20 former staff, parents and committee members of Magda Karwath Children’s Centre as well as Councillor Peter Gibbons.
Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Michael Rossiter, said the capsule was buried by Magda Karwath Children’s Centre staff in 1988 and was due to be unearthed on 4 December 2013, but recently came to Council’s attention when a former staff member found out the council-owned site was to be auctioned on Saturday, 16 July.
"It was a well-sealed capsule and the contents were well-preserved. Inside were about 30 letters, which had been addressed, presumably, to their authors’ then-residences."
"We don’t know if those who wrote the letters would receive them if we sent them now. However, we think they would make an excellent display at the Moe Service Centre and Frank Bartlett Memorial Library.
"There was a press-clipping detailing how the centre was named in honour of a local kindergarten teacher, Magda Kawarth, who was instrumental in the establishment of local before and after school care programs. One letter also contained photographs of all the children at the centre in 1988 and one of the staff."
More information about a possible display will be announced in the coming weeks.
