Professor Garnaut Visit ProductiveThe visit of climate change advisor Professor Ross Garnaut to address Latrobe City’s Low Carbon Transition committee has been hailed a success. By Latrobe City - 14th April 2011 - Back to News Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that having Professor Garnaut attend the inaugural meeting was a significant highlight for the committee. The committee are very pleased that our group is comprised of representatives from a broad range of sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, education, unions, engineering and forestry.
"Welcoming someone as high profile as Professor Garnaut to Latrobe City really put our municipality on the map in terms of transition planning towards a low carbon future.
"The committee held its first meeting to discuss Latrobe’s unique policy ‘Positioning Latrobe for a low carbon emission future’ and to consider the key challenges and opportunities. Having Professor Garnaut address the committee at the first meeting provided a clear context for the committee and underpinned the importance of taking these necessary steps to be prepared for what the future may bring to our region," Cr White said.
Committee members were provided with a global perspective on climate change action as well as a national update. Importantly, committee members were able to seek clarification from the professor on a range of issues from specifics such as potential impacts of a scheme on certain sectors to broader community transition and education questions.
"We look forward to welcoming Professor Garnaut back to the Valley possibly in June for a public forum," Cr White concluded.
