More than 350 students and their families will be attending the first Monash University Gippsland Campus Graduation for 2004 on March 20. All Faculties will be represented at the graduation with Mr Felix Pintado, CEO of the Latrobe Regional Hospital giving the Occasional Address at the morning ceremony beginning at 10.30am and Mr Ken Tabart, Manager, Morwell GHD Pty Ltd at the afternoon ceremony at 2.30pm.

Ms Judy Tennant will present ‘Process in applying for VC’s Award’ at the Faculty of Business & Economics Exchange Forum on Tuesday, March 23 at 1pm in the Business & Economics Conference Room, Monash University Gippsland Campus. Ms. Tennant won this prestigious award in 2003.

• Making the Grade

To get secondary students pumped up about IT, the Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology is running ‘GippsWEB’. The GippsWEB competition will provide an opportunity for secondary students to develop and showcase their team building, research and IT skills in a number of areas. Entry is free. An independent panel of multimedia experts will judge all entries with prizes being presented at Monash Open Day on Saturday, July 31st.

Two high achieving Monash University Gippsland Campus Information Technology (IT) students have gone directly from the classroom to the workplace, thanks to a new industry internship program. Mr Mark Micallef (Lowanna Secondary College, Moe) and Mr Ian Berry (Warragul Regional College) were both selected based upon their top academic performances to participate in an IT work program with Australian Paper Maryvale Mill from December to March. Besides being paid for their three months work, Mark and Ian gained practical experience and knowledge and received credits towards their degree.

Kate Cartwright from the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the Gippsland Campus has been named winner of a Rural Women’s Leadership Bursary, in recognition of her extensive community activities. For her achievement, Kate was presented with $2,000 towards her studies into rural youth issues by John Thwaites, MP and Mary Delahunty, MP at Parliament House on Thursday, March 11.

Six Gippsland Campus representatives, including Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Brian Mackenzie, participated in a three-day Monash University planning conference from March 7-9. The conference, entitled ’Excellence and Diversity in a Changing Higher Education Environment’ provided a broad framework for the campus planning taking place throughout the university. A number of positive outcomes came from the event, including the reaffirmed support from the University for the outer urban/regional campuses.
