Rooster Hot FavouritesIn the eyes of most, Roosters is the hottest team in the Melbourne Rugby League (MRL) competition at the moment. By Gippsland Rugby League Inc. - 7th June 2004 - Back to News Storm needed a win up their sleeve and were favoured to provide a minimum margin against top-seeded Altona Roosters but Roosters proved far too strong on the day defeating Storm 106-14.
"I was disappointed with the loss yet very happy with Storms performance reverting back to basic football. Without numbers, the best football is basic football which is what Storm delivered on the day. Roosters having conceded three tries is a plus for Storm in my books," coach Hiriaki stated.
The attendance of Peter Bevan, General Manager for Victorian Rugby League to last weeks crisis meeting was favourouble providing valuable assistance and a lifeline to the plight with lack of players. The League in conjunction with players will now embark on a newly developed recruitment program. Part of this program will be integrated with Sausages sizzles at various different venues providing visual aids of rugby league.
"There is a perception in the wider community that what we see on TV from the NRL matches is how we play in the MRL competition. Whilst players aspire to attain NRL level, the matches structured through MRL is a stepping stone with material & visual aids available to assist with educating the community. All coaches must hold an Accredited Coaching Certificate for Seniors before the League will consider the appointment of a coach. Currently, Gippsland Storm is one of a few clubs in the Melbourne Rugby League competition to hold an Accredited Level 2 Coaching Certificate. The next level is predominantly to coach an NRL team," states Acting President, Anthony Huxford.
Next weekend is a general bye. Storm will travel to Ballam Park, Cranbourne on Sunday 20th June to play Sharks. Sharks will be determined to notch another two points on the board however, Storm may provide a comeback albiet dependant on the recruitment program.
