Free chemicals available to aid weed control

Applications are being invited for free chemicals for approved weed control on roadsides in a scheme funded through the Good Neighbour State Weed Initiative.

By Latrobe City Council - 21st December 2005 - Back to News

Individuals and groups are invited to apply for the chemicals through the scheme conducted as a partnership between Latrobe City Council and the Department of Primary Industries

The available chemical will be Metsulfuron (Brushoff) and it will be supplied in either 40 or 200gram packs together with a suitable quantity of wetting agent.

Latrobe City’s pest plant coordinator, Peter Steller, said that the scheme had operated over the last three years to assist rural landholders with roadside weed infestations adjacent to their properties.

"All landholders have a responsibility to take reasonable steps to prevent the spread of regionally controlled weeds on roadsides adjoining their property," Mr Steller said.

"The aims of the scheme are to encourage and support participation in the control of weeds on roadsides, and to provide a line of communication so that future problems can be quickly dealt with.

"By tackling the spread of weeds we can prevent further land degradation as well as reduce the haven for pest animals such as foxes and rabbits on roadsides, and enhance wildlife habitat and corridors," Mr Steller explained.

Applications forms for the free chemicals can be obtained through Latrobe City Council’s service centres at Moe, Morwell and Traralgon. Landholders are encouraged to submit joint applications with their neighbours to enable more efficient use of available resources.
