Another Labor Pre-Election Advertising Splurge

Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis today slammed the Bracks Government for its splurge of another $2.2 million on self promotion.

By Phillip Davis - 9th August 2006 - Back to News

Mr Davis said John Brumby’s latest outrageous abuse of his stewardship of tax-payer funds is yet another opportunity for the Bracks Government to use the public purse to promote itself in the lead-up to the November election.

"The Bracks Government is already spending $80 million on advertisements that are blatantly political and designed to bolster Labor’s popularity," Mr Davis said.

"John Brumby’s announcement today that he is going to spend yet another $2.2 million of Victorians’ hard earned money on more advertising beggars belief.

"It is a disgrace that this advertising campaign is being launched 16 weeks from the state election."

Mr Davis said country Victoria was a great place to live and do business, but spending $2.2 million telling promoting the Victorian Government in country electorates is an abuse.

"This money would be better spent upgrading services and infrastructure in country Victoria, therefore encouraging businesses to expand and relocate," he said.

"Other than advertising, the Bracks Government has done nothing to convince people that they should relocate with their families to country Victoria.

"Our hospital system is in strife, the rural ambulance service is in disarray, public transport is a joke, schools are falling apart, the Government has failed to deliver promised gas connections and fast rail, country people are so wrapped up in red tape they spend all their time filling out Bracks Government paperwork instead of doing business.

"If John Brumby actually lived in country Victoria instead of directing his portfolio from Spring St, he would realise actions speak louder than words to country Victorians.

"Instead of promoting the Bracks Government to country Victorians, we need to see some real action.

"Let’s see improvements to services and infrastructure, instead of yet another opportunity for the Bracks Government to spend tax-payer’s money promoting itself before the state election."
