‘Cyborg soldiers’, the merging of human bodies with pharmacological or biotechnologies and the use of automated weapons systems which takes the human agent from the field of war and its consequences, will be discussed at the Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences Research Forum this week. Dr Simon Cooper will present ‘Post-Human War and the future of Military Intervention’ on Thursday, September 2 from 1pm.

‘Language and the Labour Market experiences of Rural-Urban migrants in South Africa: a Cross-Disciplinary study’ is the topic for the School of Business and Economics Exchange Forum presented by Associate Professor Brett Inder, Head of Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics on Tuesday, August 31 from 1pm in the Business and Economics Conference Room.

The Gippsland Campus will be involved in International Application Day to be held at the Caulfield Campus on Saturday, September 4. Gippsland Campus may be able to benefit from recent changes to immigration laws which grant additional permanent residency points to those who study at regional campuses such as Gippsland Campus.

Making the Grade

Jacqui Maiden, Gippsland Campus Faculty of Education graduate in 2004, won the Herald Sun Beginning Teacher of the year award last week. Jacqui is currently teaching Grades 3 and 4 at the Churchill Primary School where she also undertook her internship last year. Jacqui was presented with $2500 prizemoney from the Department of Education and Training and a certificate at the Plaza Ballroom in Melbourne. Jacqui will be returning to the Gippsland Campus on September 10 to discuss her experiences with Education students currently undertaking the Internship Program which places students into local schools for 40 days in their final year of study.

Open Subject

Forty-six Year 10 and 11 students from Lowanna Secondary College Moe will be visiting the Gippsland Campus on Thursday, September 2. The students will be given an overview of what the Gippsland Campus has to offer them, undertake interactive activities in the various Faculties, a tour of the campus and an opportunity to enjoy the current exhibition on display in the Switchback Gallery.
