Travelling Treasures To Visit Moe LibraryThe State Library of Victoria’s roadshow event, ‘Travelling Treasures’ will bring to Moe Library on Thursday 8 March, a collection of artefacts from the Library’s treasures collection, By Latrobe City - 16th February 2007 - Back to News encompassing the theme of Australian stories.
The selection of six items coming to Moe are drawn from the Library's 21 treasures comprising rare books, pictures, maps, Australian manuscripts and children's literature collections.
Latrobe City Mayor, councillor Tony Zimora said that the collection represented many important historical events in Australia’s history and would be sure to generate much interest amongst library visitors.
"The ‘Travelling Treasures’ display includes the voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay with an account of the establishment of the colonies of Port Jackson and Norfolk Island, published 1789 by Phillip, Arthur (1738-1814).
"Also in the collection is the diary of Samual Lazarus, recounting his time on the goldfields and a first hand account of the Eureka Rebellion, dated September 24 1853 to January 1855.
"There are also two authentic maps of the Victorian goldfields and The Lofty Cannon Collection, comprising a letter from Ron Searle to Lofty Cannon (both prisoners of war at Changi in Singapore) and a visual diary by the artist Ron Searle given to Lofty Cannon.
"The latter collection provides both comic and thoughtful observations by the artist," Cr Zimora said.
"As the items in this roadshow feature three key stories that reflect Australian identity - the first fleet, the Eureka Stockade, and the story of Changi prisoner of war camp, there should be considerable interest in the collection. It is a visual insight into the shaping of our country and we are delighted to be exhibiting this excellent collection of materials," Cr Zimora said.
The Travelling Treasures collection comes to Moe Library on Thursday 8 March 2007 from 6pm to 7.30pm. For further information, contact the library, by phoning 5135 8350. People wishing to attend the roadshow should rsvp by Monday 5 March 2007 by 5pm on 5135 8350.
