Liberals Commit To Duck Season And Game HuntingA Liberal Government will guarantee the continuation of the traditional duck hunting season, Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today. By Phillip Davis - 9th August 2006 - Back to News Mr Davis said in addition to maintaining the duck season, a Liberal Government was committed to ensuring the future sustainability and growth of game hunting in Victoria.
Victorian shooters and their organisations played an instrumental role in the development of State Game Reserves in Victoria.
Mr Davis said a Liberal Government would work to ensure the preservation of habitat and management of Victoria’s native and introduced game species is continued into the future.
"At least 25 years before the advent of LandCare, hunters formed Field and Game Australia and commenced investing hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours into rehabilitating protected wetlands," Mr Davis said.
"Revenue from hunting licence fees will be dedicated to a trust fund established by a Liberal Government, to be spent on conservation and game management activities.
"We will also establish a statutory Game Council to develop and oversee the implementation of strategic plans to secure and develop hunting in Victoria on a sustainable basis.
"Just as is the case with recreational fishing licences, all revenue including any fees and charges payable in connection with these licences, will be hypothecated to conservation and game management purposes."
Mr Davis said the Game Council will be responsible for representing the interests of licenced game hunters
"It will make recommendations on the gazettal of public lands for hunting, provide advice to the Minister on game management, liaise with other agencies in regard to feral and pest animal control and promote research and conservation projects," he said.
"Game species are valuable to all Victorians and the continued work of shooting organisations and their volunteers constitutes a great service to Victoria.
"A Liberal Government is committed to better managing Victoria’s habitat and game resources, in conjunction with shooting organisations and their volunteers."
