Recycling – It’S Time To Get Sorted!Research shows that 48 percent of Australians are confused about what they can and cannot recycle. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 6th November 2006 - Back to News To solve this problem, Planet Ark and Bass Coast Shire Council are celebrating National Recycling Week with the launch of a new national recycling hotline and website that shows people what they can recycle in their local area.
"So much that could be recycled or reused is ending up in Australia’s landfills," says Planet Ark Founder, Jon Dee.
"To stop this, we’re launching the National Recycling Hotline and the RecyclingNearYou.com.au website to make it even easier for Australians to recycle."
Developed in collaboration with Sensis and the Australian Government, the new website and hotline include the details for recycling and safe waste disposal in 672 council areas around Australia. Bass Coast Shire Council is one of the supporters of this national initiative.
"To find out what you can recycle in Bass Coast, all people have to do is type in their postcode at RecyclingNearYou.com.au," says Council’s Waste Management Officer, Pete Roberts.
"If you don’t have Internet access, you can also call the National Recycling Hotline on 1300 733 712 to find out how to do the right thing with your waste."
Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week is now in its eleventh year and since its inception the event has helped to dispel much confusion surrounding recycling. A Planet Ark report entitled ‘Recycling Myths: Sorting Fact from Fiction’ is being released this week to examine and bust the myths that have circulated about recycling.
"Despite these negative myths, Australians are doing very well in some areas of recycling," says Dee.
"We’re recycling two billion aluminium cans and 75.4 percent of our newspapers every year.
"Three million printer cartridges were recycled by ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ and last year, the makers of ‘SAFE’ turned 8,500 tonnes of office paper into household paper products.
"However, there’s great room for improvement which is why we’re launching this new recycling service. National Recycling Week is a great opportunity for us all to improve our recycling habits and help the environment," he said.
National Recycling Week runs from Monday, 6 November to Sunday, 12 November 2006.
