Bass Coast Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden hosted a round table discussion on education last week.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 30th October 2006 - Back to News

Representatives from local secondary schools, TAFE, Department of Employment Education and Training (DEET), Monash University, Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN) and apprenticeship and training groups attended the meeting.

The object of the discussion was to formulate a response to the demands of Bass Coast’s growing population and the need for a greater range of skills and knowledge.

Council is currently developing an Education Policy and Strategy to improve education outcomes and opportunites for young people in the area. Bass Coast currently has a very low rate of secondary students continuing to Year 12 and entering tertiary studies.

The round table forum allowed the education providers to all come together for the first time. Council was commended on taking the initiative to work with the education sector in planning for the future economic and social growth of the community. The group strongly endorsed the development of an Education Policy and Strategy to deal with local issues.

The participants at the round table will form a reference group to guide the Strategy. The first workshop will be conducted later this year.
