Poplars Get The Chop

Poplars on the banks of the Mitchell River just north of Bairsndale are now facing the end of their days.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 15th February 2006 - Back to News

A joint program to remove them has begun with East Gippsland Shire Council, the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority funding and coordinating the task with assistance from The Bairnsdale Urban Landcare Group.

Re-vegetation will start in May-June with the new trees being provided under the Regional Biodiversity & Red Gum Plains Landscape Restoration Project Tree Planting Program Autumn 2006.

When the current work program has removed the poplars, the Landcare group will divide the whole of the North Bank area along the popular Walking track into 100 metre sites.

These will then be assigned to family groups or any group of people prepared to look after the trees until they are well established under the Adopt-a-site initiative.

Each Adopt-a-site area will be appropriately signed to recognize the people who are working on it.

An amount of $5500 was also recently allocated to the Bairnsdale Urban Landcare Group from a Second Generation Landcare Grant to continue environmental based work on the Mitchell River that may include further poplar removal and re-vegetation activities.

East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority is also conducting bank stabilisation works on the same section of river.
