Monash University Gippsland Campus is ready for its new group of Australian and International students who will begin their tertiary education this week. Orientation Week (‘O’ Week) began on Friday with a welcome dinner for international students followed by a weekend of activities. ‘O’ week for first year undergraduate students begins today (Monday) with the corridors once again filled with the noise of students finding their way around the campus familiarising themselves with lecture theatres, laboratories, the library, bookshop and meeting staff who will be teaching them over the next few years. The University learning environment is different from secondary school and there are many networks and services available to students, especially first year, to help ease the transition. ‘O’ week is the best preparation for students to get a positive start to the year ahead.

Highlights of the week will be the two day academic orientation program on February 26 and 27 with staff at the Gippsland Campus cooking up a storm for the new arrivals at the pancake breakfast, outside the Binishell on Wednesday morning, before donning their academic gowns for the official welcome. The ‘Flag Presentation and Welcome Dinner’ for Australian and Internationals students will be held on February 27 with 15 flags being raised, each flag representing the 15 different countries of the international students who will be studying on Campus. Countries include Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Brunei, Malawi, Thailand, Bangladesh, South Korea, Bhutan and China.

The first weekend school for Distance Education students will be conducted on March 1 and 2 with a campus welcome dinner to be held on the Saturday evening for staff and students to meet in a relaxed environment. The academic year begins on Monday, March 3.

• Making the Grade

A/Professor Phil Rayment (School of Applied Science) and Dr Lyle Munro (Head, Sociology HUMCASS) presented the Monash Prize to Gippsland secondary students, Krystal Harrison (Mirboo North Secondary College) and Tilly Junker (Lavalla Catholic College) at ceremonies held at Traralgon and Mirboo North last week. The Monash Prize is presented to high achieving students nominated by their schools.

• Open subject

The Faculty of Business & Economics is currently conducting a water research project and are seeking valuable input from consumers of town water. If you are concerned about water issues you can assist the research team by attending a small group session to gather information about water usage. To cover incidental expenses a reimbursement of $20 will be provided. To register please phone the Gippsland Research Information Service on 5122 6418 by Friday 29 February, 2003. Vacancies exist in sessions running on Tuesday, March 4, 7.30-9pm, Wednesday, March 5, 1-2.30pm and Thursday, March, 6, 7.30-9pm.
