"It is a positive signal for investment in the Gippsland region and

I congratulate the company on taking this step forward.

"I’m confident the local community will get right behind the work, which

I understand will create 400 additional jobs during construction and a further 200 new full time jobs in the future," Mr Hall said.

"The other thing we need to do as a community – and I urge the State and Federal Governments to take heed of this – is to think carefully about how we leverage this expansion to assist the development of other industries in this region.

"It might revolve around rail, roads or ports, or education and training.

The one this that is certain is that there will be opportunities for the region that flow from this development and we need identify and take advantage of those."

The investment is a little over a quarter of a billion dollars and Australian Paper has flagged a further $300 million is likely to be invested over the next 20 years by the owners of new plantations established to supply the mill.
