Rutherglen Road streetscaping work underwayRutherglen Road Newborough a hive of activity as Newborough Village streetscaping work builds. By Latrobe City Council - 23rd March 2001 - Back to News Rutherglen Road Newborough has become a hive of activity over the past few weeks as the Newborough Village streetscaping work builds to a peak.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins said that major work currently being undertaken on the streetscaping would continue for approximately another three weeks, with extensive landscaping still being undertaken until late April or early May.
“Rutherglen Road is on the verge of an exciting revitalisation. Once the streetscaping project work is completed, Newborough will proudly proclaim a commercial and arts precinct that generates excitement and engenders a thriving village atmosphere,” Cr Jenkins said.
“Latrobe City is far more than just the big towns like Moe, Morwell and Traralgon. The rural communities, smaller towns and shopping areas like Newborough Village add vitality to the City, and play an important role in serving the needs of all citizens,” Cr Jenkins said.
Councillor Tony Zimora said the Newborough Streetscaping project encompassed underground power reticulation, drainage works, footpath work, street trees and landscaping in Rutherglen Road.
“The initial stages of the work are being funded by a $50,000 State Government initiative, at least $300,000 funding from Latrobe City Council, and assistance from the powerline relocation fund,” Cr Zimora said.
“Newborough Village traders have been looking forward to the completion of works since the announcement of funding in April last year. Their efforts in working with Council in developing the area is soon to realised. The project is now well underway,” Cr Zimora said.
“Newborough village embraces its community. There are positive connections through local schools, and also through its thriving arts area. Rutherglen Road is part of a unique area in Newborough, a real village atmosphere where the community receives service in a relaxed environment.”
“We must thank all committee members from the Newborough Village who have worked on this project, those who have contributed their ideas and have had input into the project design. Rutherglen road is a much loved local area, and in just a few short weeks, a new era for Newborough will begin,” Cr Zimora said.
