Moe Roundabout to feature as key gateway to Walhalla and mountainsMoore Street / Old Sale Road junction to be highlighted as key entry point to Walhalla and Mountain Rivers Region. By Latrobe City Council - 23rd March 2001 - Back to News The Moore Street / Old Sale Road junction is to be highlighted as the key entry point to one of Gippsland’s most popular tourist destinations, the Walhalla and Mountain Rivers Region.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said a $35,000 grant provided by the State Government through ‘Pride of Place’ funding, together with a significant Council contribution of $15,000 would allow beautification and landscaping works to highlight Moe as a tourism gateway.
“Moe is the key southern approach to spectacular mountain scenery, historic goldfields, national parks, the Upper Thomson Dam, and the historic township of Walhalla together with its associated scenic railway from the Thomson River,” Cr Jenkins explained.
“Visitors are attracted to the region for sightseeing, bushwalking, skiing, canoeing, camping, and numerous leisure activities; and most people access the region through Latrobe, often staying in Latrobe as it makes a great base to explore from.
Through this ‘Pride of Place’ project, Moe will be recognised as the gateway to the Victorian Mountain Rivers Region, and the gateway to Latrobe from Walhalla,” Cr Jenkins said.
“The Moore Street intersection with Old Sale Road provides a long, open vista to the north of Moe, with views across the landscape towards the ranges. The views along Moore Street looking north currently do not provide any sense of entry or direction as to where the driver is heading. In fact, the power lines and vegetation provide the only vertical interest in the otherwise broad and relatively undifferentiated landscape. There is little form of any identification,” Cr Jenkins said.
“The aim of this project is to enhance the attractiveness of Moe through landscaping and tree planting at the town’s approach, signalling the town’s appeal as a destination or journey break to tourist traffic.
“Indigenous tree species will define the boundaries of the site, and ground species will continue and strengthen this theme, while maintaining the views through the space and beyond to the surrounding countryside,” Cr Jenkins added.
“The landscaping works proposed will soften the hard industrial landscape of the area and improve and add significantly to the vista of the ranges beyond the immediate area.
“Latrobe City’s Municipal Strategic Statement identifies the Moe Urban Settlement as a focal point for tourists to Latrobe City and as a gateway to other attractions in the wider Gippsland area. The works being undertaken in this ‘Pride of Place’ project will greatly improve the amenity of the area for visitors and the citizens of Latrobe,” Cr Jenkins concluded.
