Bass Coast Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden cautiously welcomed the Government’s announcement they have a plan to secure the State’s water needs.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 22nd June 2007 - Back to News

"The Premier called this morning to confirm that the Wonthaggi region has been selected as the site for a desalination plant," said Mr Bawden.

"The obvious benefits of a project of this size are investment, jobs and security of the local water supply.

"We will do everything in our power to ensure that concerns regarding the impact of a desalination plant on the landscape, environment and the community are properly addressed," he said.

"The Premier has guaranteed that the Council will be involved in the environmental approvals process.

"We are waiting on further details on the proposed site and the approval process from the State Government.

The $3.1 billion desalination planet will be the largest in Australia and is set to be completed by 2011. The plan will provide 150 billion litres of water per year and includes an 85 kilometre pipeline connecting it to Melbourne. Smaller pipelines will connect nearby towns in South Gippsland and the Westernport area.
