Superbikes Are ComingPreparations are well advanced for the first round of the 2012 World Superbikes Championships which return to Phillip Island from 24 to 26 February. By Bass Coast - 14th February 2012 - Back to News If weather conditions are good, in excess of 60,000 enthusiasts are expected to descend upon the world famous Island Circuit for three days of racing and support activities.
Bass Coast Shire Council Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said traditionally the Superbikes attract die hard race enthusiasts from right around the country and early indications are that this will again be the case.
"Many motorcyclists ride to Phillip Island from Queensland and Northern New South Wales," explained Mr Piasente.
"Riders also trek across the Nullabor from Western Australia in what is an annual pilgrimage to the Australian Mecca of motorcycle racing."
Traffic Management Council, Vic Roads and Police have put together a significant plan to manage the traffic and minimise its impact on the community. Current roadworks on the Bass Highway and Phillip Island Road will create "pinch points" for traffic and all road users are advised to exercise extreme caution through roadwork zones.
Peak traffic times are expected from 8.00am to11.00am in the morning and from around 4.00pm in the afternoon after each day’s racing, as patrons make their way back to their accommodation or return to Melbourne. Anyone not involved in the event is advised to try and avoid the roads directly around the Circuit, as well as Phillip Island Road and the Bass Highway during the peak periods, or to factor in extra travel time.
Mr Piasente explained that World Superbikes and other large scale events generate significant economic benefits to the region. "The 2011 event was estimated to bring in excess of $18 million to Bass Coast.
"This is indicated in services used by tourists such as accommodation bookings which are already very solid for this event with many regulars taking up their usual accommodation, "Mr Piasente said.
