High Winds Increase Fire Risk

Fire crews have managed to prevent any serious new outbreaks in the Bogong Complex fire despite today’s extreme fire conditions.

Fire crews have managed to prevent any serious new outbreaks in the Bogong Complex fire despite today’s extreme fire conditions.

Winds gusting up to 70 kilometres per hour on Mount Hotham today made asset protection the priority of the day, particularly in the Hotham, Dinner Plain and Omeo areas.

Increased fire activity on Mount Sam and Mount Mesley, just north of Omeo, with associated spotfires has kept fire crews particualrly busy.

Incident Controller, Ben Rankin said that fire behaviour has been better than expected, given the wind conditions today.

"We’re pleased with the amount of fire spread and spotting so far, which has not been as bad as we expected," Mr Rankin said.

Communities from Hotham and Omeo to Benambra are still on high alert and the Swifts Creek, Bindi and Cassilis areas are also remaining vigilant for increased fire activity.

The Splitters Range spotfire, which has caused some concern has been a major focus for firefighters and so far has stayed within control lines.

Aircraft have been able to fly today and provide information on the position of the fire to the Incident Management Team at Swifts Creek DPI office.

The Red Cross is assisting with the registration of people coming and going at the Omeo Staging area. They are also catering for Department and CFA staff and those seeking refuge at the Staging Area and providing first aid when necessary, food parcels, organising accommodation for those without homes and service providers staying in the area.

Residents should check with local authorities before travelling between Omeo and Swifts Creek. The Great Alpine Road is still closed North of Bruthen.
