International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day

Bass Coast women came out in force this week to celebrate the centenary of International Women’s Day.

By Bass Coast - 11th March 2011 - Back to News

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Veronica Dowman, said the annual International Women’s Day Luncheons had grown in popularity so much, that this year two were being held.

"Thousands of events are held worldwide on and around 8 March to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women, past, present and future," said Cr Dowman.

"The Bass Coast celebrations are about inspiring local women and encouraging them to be involved in their communities.

"Statistics show that women are still under-represented on boards, councils and in high level posititions in organisations – we all need to work hard to address this," continued Cr Dowman.

The first IWD event was held at Archies on the Creek on Friday, 11 March and the second event will be held on Friday, 18 March 2011 at Silverwater Resort.

Both events are a sell out.

"We’re lucky to have two interesting guest speakers at the events," said Cr Dowman.

"Chloe Munro, Chair of AquaSure, spoke about her career in both public and private sectors in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

"She had some interesting insights from her involvement on boards and as the Director of Hydro Tasmania and the National Water Commission.

"Our guest speaker next week is Ann Jeffery. Ann has been working in event management for the last 20 years and will be able to share her experience as a busy mum, business owner and achieving work/life balance.

"Ann’s company has worked on major events like the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Moomba, The Big Day Out and many more," continued Cr Dowman.

Council would like to thank its generous sponsors Tropical Zone Flowers, Archies on the Creek, Purple Hen Vineyard and Winery, Rhyll Trout and Bush Tucker Farm, Beachside Hair and Beauty, Revive, Complexions on Billson, Silverwater Resort and Cleanskin Kitchenware
