Baw Baw Shire Council Mayor, Ian Clark said council understands that parishioners are supportive of the church’s decision. "Council believes that St Ita’s plan to build a bigger church to better serve the needs of the growing Drouin community," said Cr Clark. Under Section 29A when an application for the demolition of a building or part of a building is made, the building surveyor must apply for the report and consent of council. The report and consent council provide to the building surveyor informs him or her if a planning permit is required for the alterations or demolition. "As no heritage controls cover this property, no planning permit is required for its demolition," said Cr Clark. "Council is aware that this is a sensitive issue and some residents may be upset with the church’s decision to apply for the demolition order. "The church and houses are the property of the Roman Catholic Church, and, in the absence of any protective overlays they can do with it as they choose." Council officers received the application on 6 June and brought the matter to the attention of councillors. Council agreed to issue the report and consent of demolition at a council briefing held on 14 June 2006. Source: http://gippsland.com/ Published by: support@gippsland.com
