Disability Is No BarrierA photo exhibition exploring the working lives of Victorians living with a disability will be on show at the Inverloch Community Hub for one week, from Tuesday, 9 November to Monday 15 November. By Bass Coast - 17th November 2010 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s RuralAccess Officer, Kathryn Pryor, said the exhibition was currently touring Victoria, promoting the benefits of hiring people with disability.
"The exhibition showcases a group of Victorians living with a disability and the contribution they make to their workplaces and local communities," said Ms Pryor.
"The biggest barrier to employment for people with a disability can often be a lack of understanding of the skills and capabilities they bring to business and our community.
"The exhibition shows that disability is no barrier to employment," continued Ms Pryor.
The exhibition is the first in a series of events being held across the region to celebrate International Day of People with a disAbilility (IDPD) on 3 December.
IDPD is celebrated worldwide on 3 December each year to promote awareness of the contributions and experiences of people with a disability. Local IDPD events include:
§ Kongwak Market Celebration at Kongwak on Thursday, 2 December; local market day with collectables, vintage, retro, coffee, curry and more, including a live performance by Willy Golightly, to raise awareness and celebrate the achievements of local people of all abilities.
§ Active Abilities Wheelchair Basketball at Wonthaggi YMCA on Friday, 3 December; an exhibition wheelchair basketball match where able bodied basketballers from the Wonthaggi Basketball Association are pitted against the Gippsland Wheelchair Basketball team.
§ Moonya Art Show at Over 2 Kate’s in Wonthaggi; an exhibition and sale of artwork by local artists with a disability.
§ Other Film Festival at the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre on Sunday, 5 December; a 90 minute screening of short films by, with and about people with a disability.
"With one in five Australians experiencing some degree of disability, it is vital to promote and acknowledge the achievements and contributions of people with a disability in our community," continued Ms Pryor.
