Monash Penalising Students

Recent news adds pressure to students at exam time

By Andrew Schmidt - 29th October 2002 - Back to News

The announcement of the closure of engineering at Monash University Gippsland and the incident at Clayton couldn’t have come at a worse time for students. Exams start this week.

"Monash University is now penalising the students at the business end of the year. Students will be starting exams this week and this recent news has added pressure on students," said Andrew Schmidt president of the Monash University Gippsland Student Union.

"Students in engineering shouldn’t be worried about their future when they have their finals to do. The very fact that the entire process has been done behind closed doors has left students confused and distressed. This adds to the pressure beyond the usual exam anxieties," Mr. Schmidt said.

"Students in other disciplines are now questioning the future of their programs or faculties. These worries will only penalise our students and add an extra unnecessary burden at an already pressurised time of year," said Mr. Schmidt.

"The total lack of transparency of the decision is of significant concern. Students are not being informed and there was no consultation with students or the Student Union. This a major change that will have a significant detrimental impact on our students, the campus and our community," Mr. Schmidt said.

"The government must intervene and ensure that engineering remains open and is adequately resourced. The students need reassurance that engineering will stay. The government must intervene," said Mr. Schmidt.
