Liberals To Give Pensioners A Fairer Deal

A Liberal Government is committed to easing the financial burden of pensioners by re-instating the $80 rebate on vehicle registrations.

By Parliament of Victoria - 23rd November 2006 - Back to News

Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said private vehicle transport was extremely important to pensioners living in country Victoria, where public transport networks are not as efficient.

Mr Davis said when the Bracks Labor Government abolished the $80 Pensioner Vehicle Rebate on car registrations, many pensioners were forced to give up their vehicles because they were unable to cover the costs.

"For many pensioners in country Victoria, their vehicle is their life-line," Mr Davis said.

"Whether it’s getting to doctor’s appointments, doing their weekly shopping or keeping up with their social lives, having the ability to drive a vehicle when you live in country Victoria is imperative.

"Having adequate transport such as a private vehicle also prevents isolation, which can occur when living in a country area."

Mr Davis said tens of thousands of Victorians relied on the $80 Pensioner Vehicle Rebate to assist them to keep their vehicles on the road.

"The Liberal Party is committed to ensuring the elderly and other pensioners are not confined to their homes, and are able to lead full and happy lives," Mr Davis said.

"A Liberal Government will re-instate the $80 pensioner rebate.

"To further ease the financial burden on pensioners, A Liberal Government will also introduce a new option to pay the registration in two six-monthly installments rather than one annual lump sum.

"The Liberal Party understands the issues affecting country Victorians and we fully support the contribution Victorian pensioners make to our communities."
