`Red Sails in the Sunset’

International sculptor Viktor Cebergs has created work for artlovers around the world, but his latest piece – `Red Sails in the Sunset’ – at Sale is his one of favourites.

By Wellington Shire Council - 27th September 2005 - Back to News

The stunning 11.5 metre red sculpture near the entrance to Sale has been a popular topic of conversation since it was erected last Friday, 23 September.

And like all great artwork, `Red Sails in the Sunset’, is turning quite a few heads and inspiring community debate.

The $30,000 steel abstract, adjacent to the Visitor Information Centre in Foster St, represents a three-masted sail boat in keeping with the Port of Sale’s historic mariner’s theme.

Mr Cebergs said: "The sculpture is based on the set-up of a schooner and my vision was to create a strong sense of aesthetics as soon as you drive into Sale. I wanted to create something that was not overbearing – something that has a strong, cheerful presence.

The artist travelled to Sale to work with Sale Powder Coaters and Sale Sheet Metal to construct the work over a three-month period.

"They did a great job," Mr Cebergs said. "And I love coming to Wellington Shire, it’s got the lot – the coast, the lakes and the mountains. "

Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb said: "This impressive sculpture reconfirms Sale and district’s historic links to the Port of Sale and the Gippsland Lakes.

"The sculpture is part of the Sale Urban Design Framework to improve Foster St, a major project, which aims to create a more welcoming entrance to the city and the Shire. It was funded equally by Wellington Shire Council and the Victorian Government."

Mr Cebergs’ work is well-known in Sale. Examples of his art can be seen in the award-winning Environmental Playspace at Lake Guyatt and also at the Sale Botanic Gardens.

"We are quite fortunate to have several pieces of this wonderful artist’s work in Sale, and I am sure his latest creation could well become an iconic new landmark for the city," Mr Webb said.
