Monash Weekly BulletinMark the calendar By Monash University, Gippsland - 26th March 2004 - Back to News Prospective students are invited to ‘Explore Monash’ at Gippsland Campus on April 6. The free program kicks off at 10 a.m. with a presentation about study habits and preparing for the VCE year by acclaimed motivational speaker Steven McInnes. The prospective students will then hear about the faculties they are most interested in, meet with current students and tour residences. To register call 5122 6594.
Eleven students will be presented with scholarships at a special function to be held on campus on Wednesday, March 31. The presentation ceremony will acknowledge high achievers and students deserving of extra support. Wellington Shire Council will also be presenting a special award to a student from their Shire. April 2 East Gippsland Shire Council will be awarding two scholarships to students from their Shire.
• Making the Grade
Twenty per cent of the extra income generated by recent funding changes will be used for expansion of Monash University equity and access programs, and for a new program specifically targeted to groups at a disadvantage. Monday, March 15 the Council of Monash University passed a resolution supporting increasing new students HECS contributions by 25 per cent above the standard rate for most courses in 2005. Some courses at regional and outer urban campuses will not be affected. Education and Nursing will also be exempt from increases. Also, where demand justifies it, the number of full-fee based places may also be increased. Students have the option of paying their HECS fees upon completion of their studies. Under the new government policy income required before graduates are required to start repaying will rise from $24,000 to $35,000.
Prof. Edwina Cornish will be at Monash University Gippsland Campus on March 29 to discuss research taking place at the campus and future opportunities. Since 2000 the number of higher degree by research students has climbed from 79 to more than 100. Twelve separate research units currently exist on campus.

Grand Ridge Plantation officially launched their new Gippsland headquarters at Green Inc. on Friday, March 26. Grand Ridge Plantation is the largest land manager in Victoria. The plantation pushes the occupancy rate at Green Inc. building above 80 per cent. Green Inc. is a university-affiliated business incubator.
