Statement from Shadow Minister for Country Health

Statement for the Liberal Nationals plan for health in rural and regional Victoria.

By Portal Admin - 26th September 2017 - Back to News

I am delighted to be taking on the portfolio of Country Health and to take a leading role in the Liberal Nationals plan for health in rural and regional Victoria.

My work as a country MP and as a trained health professional has given me a unique understanding of the challenges we need to overcome to improve health outcomes for country Victorians.

Under Labor, there are critical doctor shortages across regional Victoria and people are forced to travel hundreds of kilometres to access treatment, taking them away from loved ones at a very difficult time in their lives.

In country Victoria, we record some of the worst statistics on health issues like heart and kidney disease and diabetes.

The Liberals and Nationals have a vision to decentralise Victoria’s population so we can become a state of cities instead of a city state.

A critical part of that plan is to make sure we have sustainable jobs to attract growth but also better access to local health care.

That’s why as part of our vision for regional development, Matthew Guy has included the portfolio of Country Health.

Daniel Andrews is guilty of being too Melbourne-centric and under his government country health is a footnote at the bottom of a press release.
