Back Burner for Loch Sport Review Process

A draft report was published in May 2002 and a period for public comment concluded on 31 August 2002

Wellington Shire Councillors have reviewed community input to the Loch Sport Business Zone areas draft report at an informal briefing session with Development Services and determined that the review process should be placed on hold.

Development Services Manager Steven Dickson said Council was aware that the next round of the State Government’s Pride of Place funding may soon be announced. It was proposed that Council make application for funding to prepare an urban design framework for all townships along the coastal areas of Wellington Shire.

"If this funding is secured, all towns involved in the urban design framework will be invited to become part of a comprehensive consultation process from the outset," he said.

"The town of Loch Sport may be considered as part of that overall framework."

Loch Sport Business Zone review was initially triggered when concerns were raised about the appropriateness of the Business 1 Zone of a triangular area of land to the South of Basin Boulevard.

A draft report was published in May 2002 and a period for public comment concluded on 31 August 2002.

Council received 85 submissions, indicating that permanent residents did not want significant changes in the town, and Council has responded to those comments.

"We remain very much aware that changes are occurring continually in small communities along our coastal areas," said Mr Dickson.

"The nature, patterns and direction of some of these changes may place pressure on Council and the community to look again an an urban design framework for Loch Sport.

"If that time comes around, extensive community consultation will be undertaken from the outset and will continue throughout the full course of the review."
