‘The Search for Historical Literacy’ is the title of the Faculty of Education research seminar to be presented by Associate Professor Tony Taylor on Wednesday, June 16 from 9am at the Gippsland Campus. Associate Professor Taylor will discuss the need for a research-based approach to learning history, partly as a way of making teaching more effective and partly as a way of avoiding sterile public debate about how many students know the name of Australia’s first Prime Minister.

• Making the Grade

The first cohort of students undertaking the new Civil and Environmental Engineering Degree at Monash Gippsland were kept busy during their first semester studies completing community related projects. The winning team of Hilary Pocock, Brenton Graystone and Cara van Megchelen was announced last week at a presentation by the students to a panel of judges from Gippsland Water, Latrobe City and Monash University. The winning team investigated the safety issues of pressure in water mains leading to the Yallourn W Power Station and the town. The other teams studied the need for a BMX facility in the Morwell CBD and the development of a system of boardwalks and wildlife viewing hides at the Morwell River Wetlands.

Dr Lindsay Fitzclarence, Associate Dean in the Faculty of Education at the Gippsland Campus and Dr Christopher Hickey of Deakin University are currently completing a book which propose some strategies to combat the problem of footballers behaving badly. Dr Fitzclarence said that the best way to stop bad behaviour at senior levels was to attack the problem at junior levels by encouraging junior footballers to develop a sense of individual responsibility for their actions. Dr Fitzclarence said there is a fine line between illegal behaviour and the contact required in sport and footballers are not given enough training in how to walk that line without crossing over to the other side. Teachers and coaches should aim to develop players’ social and emotional skills as well as their physical skills and team tactics, which would see a change gradually work its way up through the system.

• Open Subject

A Working Party was formed recently to discuss details of a ‘Community Newspapers Conference’ planned to be held at the Gippsland Campus later this year.

160 Year 11 students from St Pauls Anglican Grammar, Warragul will be visiting the Gippsland Campus on Thursday, June 17. The students will take part in a mini lecture, ‘War in Iraq’, a presentation by Community Services on looking after yourself, on campus activities offered by the Student Union and a pizza lunch followed by interactive activities in the Faculty of their choice.

The Bulletin is a weekly service provided by Marketing and Public Affairs, Monash University, Gippsland Campus.
