Latrobe City’s annual report can now be inspectedLatrobe City’s annual report for the 2004/2005 financial year can now be inspected at each of Council’s service centres prior to it being tabled at the Council Meeting on 17 October 2005. By Latrobe City Council - 30th September 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said Council had now received a copy of the audit report from the Victorian Auditor General’s Office for the year ended 30 June 2005 and a copy of this audit report together with the annual report could now be inspected.
Mr Buckley said that as the annual report clearly indicated, 2004/2005 had been a very successful year for Latrobe City based on a range of performance and financial indicators.
"The development of ‘Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley’ in December 2004, provided the community with a common vision for Council and the community to work towards. This strategy is now being utilised by other councils as a template to follow," Mr Buckley said.
"Latrobe City has also been acknowledged as the first local government municipality in Australia to receive accreditation for its home care services by the Australian Quality Improvement Council.
"In this one financial year, we have also dramatically turned around a previously low result for recycling in the municipality, through the introduction of the three-bin recycling and waste collection system. This initiative together with community enthusiasm has increased the diversion of waste from landfill to recycling from 9.9% in the 2003/2004 financial year to 58.3% in 2004/2005," Mr Buckley said.
"Another highlight of the year would have to be the partnership developed with industry and other levels of government through the ‘Our Future – Our Place’ initiative which is providing training and employment for forty long-term unemployed, through a project developing new houses in former public housing estates," Mr Buckley added.
Mr Buckley said that Latrobe City had delivered $13.29m of capital projects to improve roads, footpaths, drains and other infrastructure during the financial year.
"Latrobe City is also considered to have managed its financial affairs in a very prudent and professional manner.
"Council’s operating result from ordinary activities, excluding the effect of asset valuations of $11.6m, was $1.9m compared to the adopted budget result of $.968m. This favourable result of $.980m primarily resulted from $.700m savings in depreciation expense," Mr Buckley explained.
"The Victorian Auditor General’s Office formed the opinion that the financial and performance reports were presented fairly in accordance with the applicable accounting standards and the Local Government Act 1989.
"Financially, Latrobe City is in a sound financial position with the key financial indicators and equity all providing a solid financial foundation to meet the challenges of the future," Mr Buckley concluded.
Copies of the 2004/2005 annual report and the audit report from the Victorian Auditor General’s Office can be inspected at the Latrobe City service centre in the civic precinct, 34-38 Kay Street, Traralgon; at the corporate headquarters at 141 Commercial Road Morwell; and at the service centre corner Kirk and Albert Streets Moe.
