Bigamy, Theft and Murder…at the LibraryBigamy, theft and murder are the themes for an exhibition that will visit libraries across Wellington. By Wellington Shire Council - 14th March 2006 - Back to News The static display, ‘Bigamy, Theft and Murder - The Extraordinary Tale of Frederick Bailey Deeming’ is on loan from the Public Records Office.
Frederick Bailey Deeming murdered his wife and four children in England and buried their bodies under the fireplace of his rented villa.
He then travelled to Melbourne with his new wife Emily, whom he also murdered.
The body was discovered by the owner of their rented house while showing a prospective client through the premises. The pair noticed a ‘disagreeable smell’ in the bedroom and after further investigation they called police. It took more than two hours for the police to dig the body out of its cement casing under the hearthstone.
The exhibition contains replicas of the original documents as well as a written narrative to explain the sequence of event.
The exhibition is free and will be on display in public areas of libraries across Wellington
