Smarter Weeds Management

Member for Western Port Province, Geoff Hilton, yesterday announced a grant from the Bracks Government to the Bass Coast Shire Council to help them tackle weeds.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 23rd June 2006 - Back to News

The $8,180 grant is one of 33 grants issued to 32 councils across Victoria under the Bracks Government’s Tackling Weeds on Private Land program.

Council’s Environment Manager, Paul Smith, said the Council would match the funding dollar for dollar.

"The benefits to our weeds management programs and the community will be significant."

The funding would be used for a range of initiatives, said Mr Smith, including:

· Detailed training for Council’s Parks & Roads team on vegetation protection and weed identification and management techniques; and

· Mapping weed infestations on roadsides with environmentally significant vegetation and reducing the weed spread on those roadsides.

Mr Hilton said the grant would provide direct assistance to the Council to identify and manage priority weeds in the local area.

"The Council can provide great assistance to our community and landholders to tackle weeds on private land and roadsides, and we want to help them do that," he said.
