A/Professor Harry Ballis, Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor at the Gippsland Campus joined the Deputy Premier, The Hon John Thwaites, on a trip to India from January 30 – February 7. A major priority of the visit will be to follow up on a Memorandum of Understanding, Monash University Gippsland Campus signed with TATA Environment Research Institute in New Delhi, India in 2004. It is believed that the Indian Institute and Monash University could work together on various research projects, especially those involving environmental science.

  • Making the Grade

Dr Barry Richardson, Director of Bionics & Cognitive Science Centre, together with Drs Catherine Haigh, Dianne Wuillemin and Mr Mark Symmons secured $39,645 research grant from the Jack Brockhoff Foundation in late 2005. The grant will be used to design and test an adaptation of a tactile aid for the blind called an ‘Optacon’, which has a tiny camera that scans a printed page and presents what it sees to a fingertip. They plan to use the ‘Optacon’ to scan an Internet page so that visually impaired people can use the World Wide Web.

Gippsland Campus student, Tamara Dunn won 2nd prize in the national ethics essay competition, organised by CPA Australia. The essay competition aims to promote the importance of professional ethics among students studying to become accountants. Tamara, received a certificate and prize money of $500 for her essay titled ‘Members of the auditing profession have a responsibility to act with professional independence when undertaking an assurance engagement’.

Gippsland Campus PR Lecturer and risk communication specialist, Chris Galloway is to speak to Local Government PR Network members in early February on ‘Bird Flu – Potential pandemic or Y2K again?’ Mr Galloway will explain how councils need to ‘unpack’ national and state level pandemic preparation plans and develop communication strategies suited to their local needs. Mr Galloway is also a speaker and panellist at a two day conference on Managing Reputation Risk, to be held in Sydney late in March.

Gippsland School of Information Technology PhD student, Mohammed Ziaur Rahman recently attended the International Conference on ‘Next Generation Wireless Systems in Bangladesh. His paper ‘Efficient Source Localisation in Wireless Sensor Networks using a Minimum Number of Sensors’ co-authored by Professor Laurence Dooley and Dr Gour Karmakar, was awarded one of the three outstanding paper awards
