The Institute for Regional Studies will be holding a conference entitled, "The ‘New Regionalism’ in Australia: A new model of work, organization and regional governance?" on 25 and 26 November at Monash University Gippsland Campus. The conference aims to help stimulate the debate on "New Regionalism" in the Australian or wider South-east Asian context. Guest speakers include regional development representatives from throughout Australia and Europe, as well as officials from the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Year 12 students are reminded that the deadline date for the Monash Gippsland Internship Program 2003 is November 29, 2002. The program links high-achieving VCE students with local employers to give students work experience and rewarding employment while keeping high-achievers in Gippsland. Local businesses sponsoring students for the 2003 Internship Program are Australian Security & Investment Commission, Bass Coast Shire Council, Energy Brix Australia, GHD Geo-Eng, Gippsland Water, Latrobe City Council Latrobe Personnel, Members Australia, Sage Technology, Stockfords Accounting, Wellington Shire Council and VicRoads.

Making the Grade

Assistant Lecturer Judy Tennant is to be acknowledged with the 2002 Vice-Chancellor's Award for Distinctive Teaching in Melbourne on November 20. The prestigious award is presented annually to one Monash lecturer for excellence in teaching. Ms. Tennant's accomplishments include setting up a BusEco Student Club, a Careers Expo and developing and promoting video-conference teaching. Ms. Tennant has been a full-time assistant lecturer at Monash Gippsland since 1991. Prior to teaching in Business and Economics for Gippsland, Ms. Tennant taught at Traralgon Secondary College for nine years. Allison Dean from Monash Gippsland won the award in 1997.

Did you know that Monash University has been involved in the planting of approximately 20,000 trees and understorey shrubs around the Churchill district? Monash University staff, along with members of the local community, have been planting the trees and shrubs over the past five years. The planting is funded by Edison Mission Energy.
