The Country Fire Authority (CFA) has stated that the Fire Danger Period for Bass Coast begins Monday, 4 December.

CFA Group Officer for Bass Coast, Damien O’Connor, explained that the Fire Danger Period is when CFA restricts the use of fire in the community.

"The introduction of the Fire Danger Period depends on the amount of rain, grassfire risk rate and other local conditions. These restrictions will be in place until 1 May 2018 unless revoked or varied," Mr O’Connor said.

Community members are encouraged to look at the CFA information sheet, ‘Can I or Can’t I?’ available on the CFA website at www.cfa.vic.gov.au for answers to commonly asked questions about lighting fires during the Fire Danger Period and on Total Fire Ban Days.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s General Manager Healthy Communities and Governance, David Elder, said that the CFA information sheet highlights the importance of knowing what you can and can't do during the declared Fire Danger Period, and on days of Total Fire Ban, when fires in the open air are legally restricted. "In Bass Coast, incinerator fires are not permitted in residential areas at any time," Mr Elder said.

"We can’t stress enough that lives and property are at risk when people do not comply with fire restrictions and regulations. The conditions are in place to keep us all safe."
