Footpath sweeping trial to start

Latrobe City is planning a month-long trial of a footpath cleaning service in specific areas of Moe, Morwell and Traralgon commencing on Monday 15 July.

Latrobe City Chief Executive Officer, Mr Richard Hancock, said that the need for this type of service had been raised on a number of occasions.

"The footpath sweeping trial will be undertaken in the Central Business Districts of each town and will operate in Moe on Monday and Thursday morning, in Morwell on Monday and Thursday afternoon and in Traralgon on Tuesday and Friday morning," Mr Hancock said.

"The sweeping service will include the removal of litter from vacant shop fronts and this, combined with the traders own cleaning activities on other days, should result in a noticeable improvement in the appearance of the CBDs.

"The trial will be evaluated over the course of the month to determine the exact impact on pedestrian movements and the level of improvement to the amenity of CBD areas, as well as identifying effective operating and resourcing schedules," Mr Hancock explained.

"We would also hope that the service could be continued beyond the trial period, and will be discussed as part of the 2002/03 budget process," Mr Hancock concluded.
