Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that the steady numbers were encouraging but urged other older citizens to take advantage of the opportunity to get involved. "The aim of Keen-Agers is to provide social table tennis for older residents who want to have fun whilst exercising and any discussion with those taking part reveals they are indeed having a great deal of fun," Cr Lougheed said. "This is a great program for seniors wishing to gain health benefits from gentle exercise as well as having a social outlet to exercise the mind. Keen-Agers is not competition table tennis so there are players of all abilities enjoying the program as a social activity. "Many participants from other programs across the state have experienced the recuperative benefits of the Keen-Agers program after surgery, illness, or injury, for example, those recovering from stroke or heart ailments, arthritis or joint problems have been greatly aided in their recuperation," Cr Lougheed said. Moe Newborough Keen-Agers Committee Member Richard Tyler, said that the mode of play for the Keen-Agers program was generally doubles which made for more fun. "Doubles helps to make the game more social. Doubles also means that players do not have to cover so much court space which is a little gentler on the body. However, there is still the opportunity for a game of singles if that’s what players prefer," Mr Tyler explained. "During the session there is also time to rest and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee at a small cost, or have a chat with other players. At the moment, there are around twelve regular players at Newborough and we are actively looking for other interested players to join the program," Mr Tyler said. Leisure Facilities Leader, Rachael Mayes said that players did not have to have any previous table tennis experience to join in the fun and reap the health benefits. "If you are interested in having some fun and getting to know other like-minded older residents, then come along to a session and try it out," Ms Mayes concluded. There is an annual registration fee of $15 to cover insurance and social membership for the Victorian Table Tennis Association, and a session fee of $3. Anyone interested in participating in Keen-Agers at Moe Newborough Sports Centre can either attend one of the sessions or contact Elma Calcraft on 5127 1769 or Richard Tyler 5122 1152.
