Morwell Movers to celebrate 20 years of fitness and funThe Morwell Movers are celebrating their 20th Birthday in September and Morwell Leisure Centre will be holding a celebratory open day on Monday 1 September to mark the occasion. By Latrobe City Council - 28th August 2003 - Back to News Morwell Leisure Centre Manager, Sandra Flack, said that all past and present members of the Morwell Movers were invited to attend the special day.
"We will be holding a free class at 10am followed by birthday cake and coffee. All past and present Morwell Movers, along with anyone who would like to help them celebrate their birthday, are invited to the celebrations," Ms Flack said.
"Congratulations must go also to Inneke Turra, the Morwell Movers instructor for 20 years. Inneke is a specialist in older adult exercise and initiated these classes in 1983. She has been teaching for the full 20 years," Ms Flack added.
Ms Flack said that the Morwell Movers had been exercising in the old Morwell Basketball stadium for 11 years prior to Morwell Leisure Centre being opened in April 1994.
"The Morwell Movers fitness club was designed to meet the fitness needs of older adults and the age range of participants is early 40s to late 70s, both male and female. Originally there were two classes per week, but when the classes became part of the Morwell Leisure Centre timetable the number of classes increased and they now have six per week, with three land sessions and three aqua aerobics sessions," Ms Flack said.
"The classes are hugely popular with approximately 450 people attending the Movers programs each month. Many are still the original members. This is a great advertisement for fitness and healthy living, as of all the classes taken here, the Movers, without doubt, have the most fun," Ms Flack added.
"Not only do they meet here 6 times a week for fitness classes, but they do regular social outings and camps during the year which Inneke organises. It’s about having fun and keeping fit, two of the most important things for living a long and healthy life," Ms Flack concluded.
