Schools Volleyball Clinics

Andrew Shears, the Volleyball Victoria Coaching & Development Manager, conducted 10 clinics at 5 local schools for about 220 year 5, 6, 7 and 8 children in Churchill, Moe and Morwell last Thursday & Friday.

By Latrobe Valley Volleyball Incorporated - 25th August 2003 - Back to News

"The clinics are part of the Latrobe Valley Volleyball association’s plan to help schools with the introduction of Volley Stars, the modified version of the game for younger players" said association secretary Howard Williams. The children were introduced to the three basic volleyball skills and began playing Volley Stars games within 20 minutes.
"It was very impressive and I'm sure that the young people got a lot out of the experience and also the teachers and Latrobe Valley coaches who were all able to learn from Andrew and will be able to follow up his work." Mr Williams said.
Danny Anderson and Diane Bosma-Lindgren, coaches from the Edison Mission Energy Gippsland Academy of Sport volleyball program were also looking for exceptional talent to develop athletes for the 2008 & 2012 Olympics. "Volley Stars could be the start of a promising indoor or Beach volleyball career. Australia is moving up in the world rankings and following the gold medal won by Kerri-Ann Pottharst and Natalie Cook in Sydney the level of interest has exploded," said Danny Anderson.
"This was the first stage in a series of school clinics, we have more schools who are interested so we will have Andrew here again as soon as possible." Mr Williams said.
The children were given information about the association’s current junior competitions in Churchill, Moe and Morwell but the long term goal is to establish school based Volley Stars competitions for years 5 to 8 in each Latrobe Valley town.
