The new cohort of local, national and international students will have their first taste of university life this week with a full program of activities provided throughout Orientation Week. The 1st year students will get to know staff, find lecture theatres and take part in activities which have been organised by Faculties, the Student Union and departments within the Campus aimed at familiarising students with their new surroundings.

A highlight of ‘O’ Week will be the ‘Orientation Welcome Dinner’ to be held on Wednesday, February 23 in the Student Lounge. During the evening the national flags of the various countries represented by the new students to the campus will be presented to the Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Brian Mackenzie.

The Gippsland School of Applied Sciences and Engineering provided Instrumental Workshops for VCE students over the past week. Nineteen Gippsland schools took part with 220 chemistry students being involved in a range of analytical experiments, designed to complement the Year 12 curriculum with equipment which is not available to secondary schools. All experiments are designed as a ‘hands-on’ experience and under supervision the students themselves run the experiments, operate the instruments and analyse the results they obtain.

• Making the Grade

The Faculty of Education at the Gippsland Campus held a highly successful seminar program last week for teachers from the Gippsland region who make themselves available as mentors for final year education students. Approximately 35 teachers attended the seminar which provides support to mentor teachers who guide the interns/students completing their 4th year of pre service teacher education two days per week in local schools.

The Gippsland School of Nursing have enrolled approximately 110 first year students. The School is delivering the Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Rural Health Practice double degree from Mildura for the first time in 2005, in conjunction with Mildura Base and Mildura Private Hospitals. Fourteen students from Mildura and will be undertaking their Orientation Program at the Gippsland Campus this week to liaise with current double degree students and Monash staff.

Approximately 140 students have enrolled in the Diploma of Foundation Studies (DOFS) program for 2005. The one year program assists students make the transition to university and offers an opportunity to enter all seven Gippsland Campus faculties.
