Bass Coast Appreciates Fire Fighters

The sunshine held on long enough for the Bass Coast community to show their appreciation of the local fire crews on Sunday 3 May.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 11th May 2009 - Back to News

Nearly 200 people, including fire fighters and their families, came to Guide Park in Wonthaggi for the Community Appreciation Day.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr John Duscher, said the day was a way to acknowledge the work of local volunteers and professional fire fighters during the February fires.

"Our local crews played a vital role in the bushfires which devasted so many Victorian communities," said Cr Duscher.

"The hard work and courage of ordinary people was highlighted during this terrible time and we wanted to be able to show our appreciation."

Fire fighters and their family enjoyed a buffet lunch and entertainment, provided by Council and Wonthaggi Rotary. Fire brigades from Kernot, Corinella, Kilcunda, San Remo, Dalyston, Phillip Island, Lang Lang, Wonthaggi and Glen Alvie were represented on the day.

The Mayor presented each brigade with a plaque of appreciation. In turn, the CFA presented Cr Duscher with the keys to the new HAZMAT fire truck. Valued at around $250,000 and equiped with the latest in fire fighting equipment and technology, the truck will be a valuable resource for the community.
