The first exhibition at the Switchback Gallery for 2005 will open on February 9 and is titled ‘The Sky is not Falling’ by Jill Wyers a recent Monash Art and Design graduate. The scale of Wyer’s textile works will overwhelm the viewer as they negotiate the series of works, shown publicly as a group for the first time. The exhibition runs until March 8. The Switchback Gallery is open from 9am-5pm weekdays at the Gippsland Campus.

Vusi Montsho, from South Africa, will be visiting the Gippsland Campus in February to build relationships and promote partnerships between themselves and the Family & Small Business Research Unit at the Gippsland Campus headed by Associate Professor Rowena Barrett. Ms Montsho works for Monash University, South Africa establishing a Centre for Black Economic Empowerment Studies at the Campus.

• Making the Grade

‘Management Labour Process & Software Development: Reality Bytes’ is the title of the recently published book by Associate Professor Rowena Barrett, Faculty of Business & Economics at the Gippsland Campus. The book looks at how businesses can manage the ever advancing computer software in the workplace and those who provide it.

The Student Union at the Gippsland Campus has announced two new appointments for the start of the 2005 academic year. Brett Bailey the new Sport and Recreation Officer has been in the Education Department for sixteen years and comes from Lowanna College, Moe where he taught Physical Education. In his new role, Brett hopes to increase students undertaking social sports, involve as many students as possible in the Southern University Games and increase the number of clubs affiliated with the Student Union. Lynette McBride is the new Off Campus Services Officer. Her role primarily involves supporting Off Campus student enquiries, provides advocacy to Off Campus students and supports the Off Campus Students Association Committee.

A Residence Program Co-ordinator has been appointed to conduct and co-ordinate social, cultural and recreational activities for students living on campus. Alister Quinn, a Melbourne University graduate will take up this new position on February 7.

Student Liaison Officers will now be known as Residential Advisors under the new structure in Student Residence Office at the Gippsland Campus. Residential Advisors are a team of 12 senior returning students who provide support and assistance on a broad range of personal and academic issues for all students who live on campus and who will be reporting to the new College Heads. Three staff members take on the role of College Heads for peer support to the students living in on campus.
