Arts Active in Wellington

Wellington Shire has a great array of arts and entertainment events happening at the moment said the Mayor, Councillor Malcolm Hole.

By Wellington Shire Council - 31st May 2006 - Back to News

"There is plenty for the community, especially at the gallery and the entertainment centre" he said.

The Gippsland Art Gallery is host to two local artists, Annameike Mein and Louise Mowat.

"The gallery has been a hive of activity this week. Both are talented local artists and I would strongly encourage those that have not seen these exhibitions to do so" said Cr Hole

Annemieke Mein’s ‘Wildlife in Textiles’ is open until 23 July. This is the largest display of Annemieke’s work ever put together in Gippsland.

Louise Mowat’s ‘Hands Through Life’ photographic exhibition is also at the gallery until 11 June.

Maffra Dramatic Society’s production of Annie has just finished three performances at the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre.

"It was fantastic to see so many local faces up on stage. The Maffra Dramatic Society did a wonderful job- it was a very professional production" said Cr Hole.

"I would encourage people to see the rising talent of 13 year old Bridey Harris, who lit up the stage as Annie"

There will be three more shows of Annie at the Maffra Memorial Hall to be held 2- 4 June.

Another local theatre group Eye2Eye is about to open their latest show, ‘Dinner’, an hilarious adult comedy, at the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre.

"We have so much local talent around. It is fantastic that these groups have the opportunity to perform locally and that residents have the opportunity to attend such great performances and exhibitions" said Cr Hole.

"We also welcome the inaugural Wellington Shire Short Film Competition, which includes many local filmmakers," said Cr Hole.

The competition is part of the Wellington Shire Short Film Festival to be held over the long weekend at the Briagolong Mechanics Institute.

"The events all contribute to the lifestyle we enjoy in Wellington, it really is a great place to live" said Cr Hole.
