‘Going Green? New Strategies for Sustainable Food Production in Australia’ will be presented by Vaughan Higgins, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the Humanities Communications and Social Sciences Research Forum on Thursday, March 9 from 2-3pm at the Gippsland Campus. Vaughan will discuss Environmental Management Systems (EMS). In 2002 the Federal Government established a national framework for EMS in agriculture and allocated considerable funding for fifteen pilot projects. Vaughan report on the Gippsland EMS based on in-depth interviews with eighteen farm management teams: Why do producers adopt EMS? Do EMSs have the capacity to challenge productivist farming practices? and, What are the main limitations of EMS as a tool of agri-environmental management?
Twenty-eight undergraduate students at the Gippsland Campus will attend a welcome and induction to the Co-operative Education Program on Friday, March 10. The students will be welcomed by the Pro Vice Chancellor, lunch with the academics from the various Faculties involved and undertake the signing of their contracts in the afternoon.
Making the Grade
The first Monash University Gippsland Campus Graduation Ceremony for 2006 was held last Saturday with approximately 375 granduands from all Faculties at the Gippsland Campus taking part in ceremonies at 10.30am and 2.30pm. Ms Lynda Bertoli, Managing Director, Sage Technology delivered the Occasional Address at the morning ceremony and Professor Val Clulow, Head, School of Business & Economics delivered the afternoon address.
Professor Sam Adeloju, Head, Gippsland School of Applied Sciences & Engineering has accepted an invitation to be a member of the Victorian Coastal Council Science Panel which is appointed by the Minister for Environment. The panel comprises a small cross-discipline group of esteemed scientists who will be advocating the issues concerning the Victorian coast. The inaugural meeting was held on February 28.
The ‘Big Day Out’ for first year international students from all campuses of Monash was held during Orientation Week with students visiting Chadstone Shopping Centre, Melbourne Zoo and games, dinner and bushdance at the Caulfield Campus.
Master of Fine Arts candidate, Alison Alder has been selected as a finalist in the 2006 Alice Prize, Australia’s most prestigious landscape prize. Alison is a painter/installation artist and her Masters research project deals with perceptions of street life in small outback towns.
