Virgins – A Musical ThreesomeIn a culture infiltrated by porn, pimps and pin-up chic, rebellion has a new name: chastity. And if Tracy and her crusading ‘virgins’ have anything to do with it, it’ll spread faster than news of Britney Spears’ latest pregnancy. By Latrobe City Shire Council - 27th February 2007 - Back to News Although its provocative title suggests a journey into titillation, Dean Bryant and Mathew Frank’s ‘Virgins - A Musical Threesome’ is a sharp, witty and relevant piece of music theatre, and is set to rock audiences on Tuesday March 6, beginning at 8pm at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre.
The title is better realised as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the production’s compendium style format of three new musicals - which all happen to explore ideas and representations of sexuality. Join a group of virgins fighting the plague of unmarried teen sex; peek into the secret world of internet porn; and watch the stakes of reality television rise to disturbing new heights as asylum seekers are forced to fight it out for Australian Citizenship, ‘Idol’ style.
The titular virginal ideal is revealed to be less a comment on the characters and more an exploration of the ways in which a woman can use her gender and sexuality to an advantage or, has it used against her.
Graduates of WAPA, Dean Bryant and Mathew Frank’s first musical, ‘Prodigal’, launched them into the spotlight of Australian music theatre winning the Green Room Award for Best Original Score and becoming the first Australian musical produced in New York City.
Latrobe City performing arts and venues co-ordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said direct from smash hit seasons in New York City and Melbourne, ‘Virgins’, held audiences captive with its exciting collision of live pop-rock and musical numbers.
"The Victorian tour of ‘Virgins - A Musical Threesome’, supported by Arts Victoria, offers regional audiences the rare opportunity to see some of Australia’s most inspired and exciting music theatre in their own towns," Ms Roberts said.
"Absurdly funny, absurdly absurd, ‘Virgins’ is a musical comedy and witty satire destined for great things," Ms Roberts concluded.
