Get Reading This SummerIt is never ‘too cool’ to hook a ride to a fictional world created by your favourite author. By Bass Coast Shire - 28th November 2005 - Back to News It is never ‘too cool’ to hook a ride to a fictional world created by your favourite author, especially during the summer holidays, according to the Australian author Jackie French.
West Gippsland Regional Library Corporation will join other libraries across Victoria as part of the "Read around Oz" campaign, which aims to encourage young people from six to 14 to pick up a book (or two!) over the summer holidays.
Jackie French is the ambassador for the "Read around Oz" campaign that sees libraries in Victoria, WA, NSW, ACT and Tasmania taking part in a program designed to encourage and promote reading and literacy.
Research in America has shown that literacy skill levels of students who do not read during the long summer holidays are diminished by the time they return to the classroom after the holidays.
"Read around Oz" has loads of activities to engage and occupy young people of all ages in reading and sharing books, writing experiences and games from Friday 2 December 2005 through to Monday 16 January 2006.
Libraries across Bass Coast Shire will be participating, including the Mobile Library. Prizes on offer, include videos, DVDs, books, movie tickets and vouchers from local businesses.
Anyone interested in taking part should contact their local library to get involved in this fantastic opportunity. Last year, over 400 children registered for the event.
Further information on "Read around Oz" is available from the West Gippsland Regional Library Corporation website at www.wgrlc.vic.gov.au, from the "Read around Oz" website at www.summerreadingclub.org.au or by contacting your local library.
