Nominations sought for City’s Australia Day Awards

By Latrobe City Council - 19th October 2005 - Back to News

Nominations are being sought from Latrobe citizens for Latrobe City’s Australia Day community awards. The awards, which will be presented on Australia Day 2006, recognise individuals and groups in the region who have significantly contributed to community life.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, called on the community to identify citizens who have made a particularly positive contribution to the community so that their work can be recognised.

"If you know someone who clearly has a strong community commitment, perhaps in caring for the environment, in sport, with the aged or children, or if you know of a group that has created an event that has enlivened and boosted community spirit, please nominate them for Latrobe City’s Australia Day community awards," Mr Buckley said.

"These awards present us with the opportunity to acknowledge the efforts and hard work that many people in our community are involved in. Often their work is unpaid and voluntary, yet it plays a vital role in the health, welfare and wellbeing of the community, and it is important to recognise, and thank, these people and organisations for their efforts," Mr Buckley said.

In 2005, the Australia Day Citizen of the Year award was presented to Vicki Hamilton, who received the award for helping raise the awareness of local asbestos sufferers through her role as secretary of the Gippsland Asbestos Related Support Group (GARDS). Christopher Larsen received the Young Citizen of the Year award for his work with Youth Council, particularly coordinating events for the 2004 International Youth Day.

The Community Event of the Year award was presented to the Gippsland Motorcyclists Toy Run, an event involving 520 bikers who raised $42,000 through their Christmas appeal.

Other events that have received the Community Event of the Year award over the years include the Moe Community Bonfire and Fireworks display, Morwell Centenary Rose Garden’s ‘Roses in Bloom’, the International 6-Day Enduro, the Wings and Wheels and Fine Foods Expo, and the Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod.

Nominations are being invited for the following Australia Day community awards in 2006:

  • Citizen of the Year
To be eligible, the person must live in Latrobe City and must be 25 years of age or older on 26 January 2006.

  • Young Citizen of the Year
To be eligible, the person must live in Latrobe City and must be under 25 years of age on 26 January 2006.

  • Community Event of the Year
Presented to the person or group who has staged the most outstanding Community Event during the year. Events must have been held within Latrobe City.

"If you know of any citizen, young or old, who deserves recognition of their service to the community, or if you would like to nominate a community event worthy of being recognised, please contact Latrobe City Council to obtain a nomination form," Mr Buckley added.

Nomination forms for Latrobe City’s Australia Day community awards are available from Latrobe City’s Service Centres in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon. Requests for nomination forms may also be made by telephoning 1300 367 700 or by e-mailing latrobe@latrobe.vic.gov.au. Nominations close Friday 18 November 2005.
