The Institute for Regional Studies seminar entitled ‘Managing the Regional Economy’ will be presented by Dr Craig Shepherd of the National Institute for Economic and Industry Research (NIEIR) on Wednesday, April 20 from 5-6pm in the Business & Economics Conference Room at Monash Gippsland. Dr Shephard will be discussing recent research in the State of the Regions 2004/5 report. He found that economic growth in regional Victoria is failing to deliver positive social outcomes.

Gippsland Integrated Natural Resource Management Forum and the Institute for Regional Studies at the Gippsland Campus will be presenting a seminar,‘Enabling Change’ on Tuesday, May 3 at 5pm at GREEN Inc, Churchill with guest speaker, Les Robinson. Mr Robinson is the author of ‘Enabling EcoAction’ and ‘The Seven Doors of Program Design’ and will speak about engaging with and motivating local communities on issues including biodiversity/Landcare, sustainable living, energy and water conservation, crime prevention and road safety.

• Making the Grade

Over 2000 Gippsland Year 12 students will be participating in the Gippsland Tertiary Information Service tour on April 26, 27 and 28. The event will be hosted by six secondary schools across the region with representatives from 11 universities, six TAFE Institutes and five private providers giving course advice and publications about tertiary study. Ms Helen Reeves, Pathways Officer with The Gippsland Education Precinct is co-ordinating the 2005 tour with a focus on pathways to TAFE and University.

Forty-five awards were presented at the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences Awards night last week. Emma Lewis won the Head of School Award and two other academic achievement awards. Tim Whittaker was presented with the Pro Vice Chancellor’s Award and Bronwyn Dreher, Terence Eder and Christina Colantuono won the $4000 Honours Scholarships. Sara Groen, Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) student was one of the winners in absentia who won an ‘academic excellence’ award. Sara is currently based in Sydney and one of the main TV presenter on channel seven’s Saturday Disney.

Also at the awards, HUMCASS PhD candidate, Coral Dow was awarded the Mollie Holman Medal for Excellence after being judged the PhD candidate to have presented the best thesis of the year, "Tatungalung Country: an Environmental History of the Gippsland Lakes". Coral Dow’s thesis explored the agency of the human and non-human world, the interaction between nature and culture, culturally defined ways of seeing and understanding the landscape, and human and natural responses to change.
