Bigger Water Tank Rebates Available Now

The Victorian Government has increased rebates on rainwater tanks purchased and installed after 1 January 2007.

By Gippsland Water - 27th March 2007 - Back to News

These rebates will reward residential customers for purchasing rainwater tanks and connecting them to the home, thereby reducing their use of mains water. The rebate is being offered by the Victorian Government as a way of helping Victorians to conserve one of our most precious resources – water.

The existing rebate of $150 for tanks over 600 litres used solely for gardens has been available for some time. Customers are now eligible to receive higher rebates for larger tanks purchased and installed after 1 January, 2007.

The rebate will be based on the size of the tank and also whether the tank is to be connected to toilet and/or laundry facilities as follows:

  • Rainwater tank of 2,000 to 4,999 litres, connected to toilet and/or laundry has a rebate of $500.
  • Rainwater tank of 5,000 litres or more connected to toilet or laundry has a rebate of $900.
  • Rainwater tank of 5,000 litres or more connected to toilet and laundry has a rebate of $1,000.

Customers are only eligible to claim one rebate for the same rebate type. For example, if you buy two 600 litre tanks, you can only claim for the purchase installation of one 600 litre tank. Rebates are available for customers purchasing tanks in two size ranges – e.g. one 2,000 litre tank connected and one 5,000 litre tank.

When buying a water tank, customers should consider the size, shape, style and colour that would best suit their desired purpose. To determine how much water can be collected from your roof, visit www.greenplumbers.com.au and go to consumer information>caring for our water>rainwater information. On average, each square metre of roof area collects one litre of water for every one millimetre of rainfall. Watering your garden with a hose connected to mains water will use about 1,000 litres per hour, but with a lower flow rate, watering with tank water uses 5 to 10 litres per minute (300 to 600 litres per hour).

Gippsland Water’s water conservation officer Kain Jackson said for toilet flushing and cold water laundry, the tank size is usually smaller than one used for garden watering.

"This is because the water stored in the tank will generally be used on the gardens in summer, when rainfall is low," Mr Jackson said. "For toilet flushing, we recommend 2,200 litre tanks or larger, while for gardens, a tank should be between 4,000 to 5,000 litres."
